ASEM's
Facilities in Mozambique
There are three centres
for abandoned, homeless and abused children and youth:
Macurungo
Centre: A home where boys from the age
of 13 years old live until they can be reintegrated
into their family or the community. Without this home,
where they live in safety and grow with dignity, they
would have little means to escape a life on the streets,
supporting themselves through prostitution, robbery
and other crimes.
Manga
Centre: A
home where boys from 2 to 12 years of age and girls
of all ages live.
Over 300 children and
teenagers currently live in these two centres.
Gorongoza
Centre: A home opening in the second half
of 2005. The Gorongoza centre will provide food, shelter
and education to 250 children who are orphans of parents
who have died of AIDS.
Two
schools: In Beira, these schools give basic
schooling and advanced education to all of the children
living at the centres. Moreover, 1600 children and
teenagers from the poorest families attend our schools
for free and receive a meal each day. These families
are too poor to buy the books and pencils for their
children to attend pulic schools.
As of May 2005, four
youngsters from ASEM's centres have already attended
university. Six more are waiting for the same
opportunity.
We have developed various
micro economic initiatives
for the future self-sufficiency of ASEM. These initiatives
guarantee the economic independence of the Centres
and serve as incentive and inspiration for the Mozambican
youth. These initiatives pursue dual goals: 1) they
contribute to the partial self-financing of ASEM's
activities 2) they guarantee vocational training to
the youngsters. Among others, the following projects
have been developed:
- A corn mill
- A bakery
- Several farms
- A handicraft training centre
- A fishery
